Doolough Valley, County Mayo

from €15.00

Doolough Valley, County Mayo is a glacial valley in southwest County Mayo, renowned for its raw natural beauty and poignant history. Flanked by the Mweelrea Mountain and the Sheeffry Hills, it serves as a spectacular stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Doolough Tragedy

The valley is most famously associated with a tragic event during the Great Famine.

In March 1849, hundreds of starving people were forced to walk roughly 19 km from Louisburgh to Delphi Lodge in freezing conditions to be "inspected" for famine relief.

After being turned away by officials, many perished on the return journey due to exposure and exhaustion. Estimates of the death toll range from 20 to several hundred.

A stone cross memorial stands at the north end of the valley, featuring a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "How can men feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings?"
